A Night Out With Anella
There’s something about New York nights that pulls honesty out of you—and Ask Me How I’ve Been, the latest project from Anella, taps directly into that energy. Across ten tracks, the North Carolina–born artist leans into themes of identity, mental health, and complicated relationships, delivering a project that feels as reflective as it does replayable.
Blending country storytelling with R&B, hip-hop, and pop, Anella continues carving out a sound that feels both intimate and expansive. Standout moments like “Demons,” “GG,” and “Thinkin Bout Us” showcase his ability to balance vulnerability with melody, while “Here and Home” closes the project on a note of self-alignment—grappling with the space between who you are and who you’re becoming.
We caught up with Anella in NYC during an intimate listening session celebrating the release of Ask Me How I’ve Been.
When you come to NYC, where’s your favorite place to hang out?
I’m usually in the Lower East Side, so I’d say the Supreme store.
Do you have a favorite venue you’ve played?
I would have to say [Gainbridge Fieldhouse], the Pacers arena in Indiana.
You played your project for us last week. Is there a song that resonates with you the most on here?
“Here and Home” definitely resonates the most because it talks about becoming content with not knowing where you belong.
You went on tour earlier last year, opening for Lil Wayne and Quavo before heading out on your own headlining tour last fall. What’s your favorite song to perform live?
My favorite song to perform live has to be “Inside My Head” because it feels like everyone connects the most. But I’m excited to find a new favorite with this project finally coming out.
Before hitting the stage, do you have a specific pre-show ritual?
Me and my team usually spend a couple of minutes alone before we go on stage.
What’s one essential you bring with you when traveling?
Burt’s Bees Vanilla Bean Chapstick.
When performing, has there been a song your fans go extra hard for that surprised you?
“Broken Hearted” is a song that gets requested a lot that still surprises me.
Who are you currently listening to?
I’m currently listening to Kanye, Zapp & Roger, and Dempsey Hope.
